A couple of years ago, we had a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers nest in a dead aspen tree in our front yard (in southeastern Ohio), about 30 feet from our front door. They fledged two chicks.
Pileated Woodpeckers don't usually go for oak, either red or white. They prefer the softer woods...
