The Benchmaker's Apprentice:Rails and Bench-Top

Here is the board that will be used for the top and bottom short rails and the two long rails.

After a lot of sawing, we have some rails. The short boards will be ripped down the middle to be used for the top and bottom short rails.

It took a bit of effort but I got this large piece of ash chopped in half for the bench-top. The piece was just long enough for a six foot bench. Not too shabby.

After only about four hours, I've got some jointed, planed, and square legs, pieces for the split-top, and pieces for the six rails. I'd say that's progress!

Slow down! You're making the rest of us look bad.

Excellent progress in a day. Great looking wood.

  2. Hunna, I'm late to your blog. This is going to be fun! Great pictures, video and commentary. But that hand sawing! I'm sure Unkie Jameel will let you use his shiny new TS75 if you ask nicely!
Keep up the outstanding work. I'm envious.

And Jim, that's a thick piece! And thanks.

  4. Hi John,

I know you aren't quite to this step yet, but I have noticed that some of the benches that use Jameel's plans have a large off center bore on the right front leg (top bore). Will you be placing that bore on your bench? The other bores look like standard 3/4"for holdfasts, what is the top bore for, and what's its size? I am making an ash bench that is knockdown style, and its modelled on photos I've seen on Jameel's site. I thought I'd ask before I drawbore my end stretchers to the legs.

I also wanted to thank Jameel for his glide instructions (though I should probably do that on a different thread). They are very easy for a woodworking newbie to use.

  5. Hi Chuck,

You are right, the lower holes are for holdfasts. That larger top hole(1 1/4")is made for access to the bench dog directly above it.

I will not be incorporating that hole into my bench. I will be starting my bench dogs farther down the bench so that hole will not be needed.
