Unsolicited

Dear Benchcrafted,
Since you guys helped me so much along the way I thought you might want to see the finished product. Very happy I decided to take this on. Thanks for all your help. I've learned (started, anyway) an incredible amount of skills just doing this bench. I am hooked.

  1. Don,

Beautiful bench! Your letter carving looks very clean. Now, let's see what you can do with it!

  2. Every time I start thinking that a Nicholson would probably serve me just fine, along comes a set of pictures like this.

  4. Thanks for the appreciative comments. I plan to do a lot of great work with this bench. But in order to achieve the full benchcrafted experience I am currently making the Moxon vise, replete with lambs tongue stop chamfers and 45 degree carve out in the middle, and also, thanks to the below from Romania, some decorative ends for the stationary vise. It is, after all, one of the three essential vises.
I also gave Jameel a closeup pic of the tail vise end: the cherry end block and maple condor tails are a nice contrast. This stuff is habit forming! Three cheers to Benchcrafted for making these modern day classics available.

  5. Don, I added the DT detail pic. Wish the pic was sharper. It looks really crisp...

  7. Wow. I'm blown away by the beauty of the bench. I'm thrilled to see that the US still has metal and woodworking craftsmen who produce vises and benches of this quality.

  8. Don:

A beautiful and inspiring work, and useful to-boot. You mentioned cherry end block and maple Condor tails. What species did you use for the main body of the bench, the leg vice and sliding dead man?

    Thanks,

    Don Mueller

  9. Hi Don:
I used ash for the legs, stretchers and most of the shelf. Quartersawn oak for the vise guide rail and a few of the shelf pieces. Leg vise, deadman and gap stop were cherry (tried to keep all the workholding areas in cherry plus it seemed to be the right balance aesthetically).
