Drilling Like A Pansy

Yes, I wimped out, and left the brace and bit alone for this. Heck, I even left alone my 1/2" DeWalt and auger bit (which is one of the incredible Japanese Owl bits from Traditional Woodworker.) I couldn't resist using one of my favorite machines, the restored 1970's Powermatic 20" drill press. The bit is one of the Colt Maxi-Cuts with extender.

  1. Jameel,
What is the thickness of the top on your bench? (the French Roubo)

    Rusty

  2. You know you have a big bench when it's easier to take the drill press to the workbench, instead of the other way around.

  3. Having drilled one inch dog holes in my 5 1/2" thick french oak bench top with a brace and bit, I like your way better.

    1. It's Top Cote lubricant. I use it to reduce vibration in the deep holes.

  5. Mr. Schwarz said that he used the Wood Owl "Nail Chipper" bit. Do you have any thoughts about the "Ultra Smooth" Wood Owl bit (not carried by Traditional Woodworker)? Thanks.

    1. I don't have any experience with that bit. I'd imagine they cut a little slower, and that the cutting spurs are more fragile. The nail chippers are robust, and leave very clean entry holes, clean enough for a workbench for sure.

    2. Thanks for the reply. I guess if they're good enough for you and Chris, they're good enough for me.
